Family-Friendly Things to Do in Maryland This Spring
Spring is one of our favorite times of year to explore Maryland with kids. It probably comes next after Summer cause I do not like cold at all. I love that the weather starts warming up, the flowers begin to bloom, and family-friendly attractions across the state reopen for the season. Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventures, free activities, or easy weekend plans, Maryland offers plenty of springtime fun for families of all ages.
This guide highlights family-friendly things to do in Maryland this spring, perfect for parents looking to make memories without overplanning or overspending.
What to Expect From Spring in Maryland
Spring in Maryland is typically from March through May. A few reasons I like Spring include:
- Mild temperatures ideal for outdoor play, so its not as burning hot as Summer could get.
- You tend to have fewer crowds at places compared to summer
- There are lots of seasonal events, festivals, and farm openings
For families with young children, spring outings are often shorter, easier, and more flexible, making it a great season to get outside again.
Outdoor Adventures for Families
There are tons of outdoor adventures to check out in Spring although some days may require a jacket or sweater to stay warm.
Parks
Spring is a great time to visit parks and ensure some outdoor time without a lot of heat or crowds. There are lots of parks in Maryland, some with waterfalls, hiking trails and more.
Visiting parks in spring also gives families a chance to enjoy blooming trees, open fields, and walking paths before peak season crowds arrive.
Playgrounds
My favorite time to visit playgrounds is actually is Spring. You would think its summertime, however summer brings huge crowds at some playgrounds so this makes Spring an easier choice for me. I wrote a blog post about playgrounds to check out in Maryland. In every or most counties in Maryland, you will find some great playgrounds. Some are themed like the Wizard of Oz playground, some also hold huge significance due to memories for the families, such as the Sophie & Madigan Playground in Frederick.

Nature Centers
Nature centers are another nice spot in the spring especially if you want to some nature exploration. One of our favorites is the nature center in Watkins Park, its a nice size one and the fact that it has the playground and other things to do around are a plus.

Easy Hiking Trails
Usually since its still a bit chilly, when hiking with kids, I try to keep it nice and short to avoid excessive cold exposures. One spot we enjoy is Patapsco Valley State Park.

Farms, Animals & Springtime Experiences
Spring is the perfect season to visit farms and enjoy animal-focused experiences with kids. As farms reopen and animals become more active, children get a hands-on way to learn about nature, agriculture, and seasonal changes.
These outings feel both fun and educational, making them a great option for families looking to slow down and enjoy the outdoors together. Check out this post on Petting zoos in Maryland.
Petting zoos and animal encounters
Petting zoos and animal encounters are especially popular in the spring, when animals are more active and the weather is comfortable for little ones. Kids love the opportunity to see, touch, and learn about animals up close

Arboretums and botanical gardens
Arboretums and botanical gardens truly come alive in the spring, offering families a chance to enjoy blooming flowers, walking paths, and peaceful outdoor spaces. Many gardens are stroller-friendly and provide plenty of room for kids to explore at a relaxed pace.
Visiting in spring also helps children learn about plants, seasons, and the beauty of nature in a hands-on way.
Farms
Spring farm visits are a family favorite, especially as farms begin offering seasonal activities and welcoming visitors again. From seeing animals to exploring open fields and participating in spring events, farms provide a memorable experience for kids of all ages.
Indoor Activities for Rainy Spring Days
Spring weather can be unpredictable, so it’s helpful to have indoor activities planned as backups. Children’s museums, indoor play spaces, and creative workshops provide a fun alternative when rain or cooler temperatures limit outdoor plans.
Having a few indoor options in mind can make spring weekends more flexible and stress-free for parents.

Children’s museums
These museums are usually a hit, especially places like Port Discovery, Maryland Science Museum. Most of them usually have memberships where you can come in several times a year.
Indoor play spaces and bounce houses
Check out the blog post I wrote a blog post about indoor play places in Maryland. There are tons of indoor play places, museums, craft spaces, bounce houses and so much more that kids will enjoy.
Creative workshops and learning centers
Creative workshops and learning centers give kids the opportunity to explore art, science, and hands-on learning in an engaging environment. During the spring, many centers offer seasonal programs, camps, and workshops designed to spark curiosity and creativity.
These spaces are ideal for families looking for educational activities that balance learning and play.
Seasonal Spring Events & Festivals
Spring fairs and outdoor festivals
Throughout the spring, many cities across Maryland host family-friendly festivals and events. These may include spring fairs, cultural celebrations, and outdoor festivals designed with kids in mind. Many events feature live music, food vendors, crafts, and activities that appeal to a wide range of ages.
Attending local events is also a great way to explore new areas and support small businesses while enjoying quality family time.

Easter activities
Easter activities are a spring highlight for families across Maryland, offering a mix of outdoor fun and seasonal traditions. You can enjoy things like egg hunts and spring festivals to themed crafts and family events. You can check out some Easter events in Maryland.
As Christians, Easter is huge for us as we celebrate the birth of Christ so we usually make sure the focus is on Christ while also enjoying egg hunts, Spring and Easter themed events.
